Hi there hope someone can help
I bought an old ih tractor needing help to identify,
everyone I have
Reached out to tells me something different so I came here
Hope you can help
Here's what I have for info

It's stamped Z on casting so I believe it 1954
It has a c-264 gas engine
Has 16.9-30 on 15" rear wheels
Was told it was originally yellow and used on Alaskan Hwy
Has power steering and I believe a t/a
Has been converted to 12 volt
Has a serial number on right side on brass tag 548 S

Hope someone can share some info thanks for your time !

Several possibilities with that much information. How about a picture? How about several complete date codes?

Guy Fay's IH Tractor Data Book says SW-6 T/A serial numbers start at 10001 to 13006. Now I'm wondering if this isn't a "Franken-tractor", assembled from spare parts. Like a Super W-6 front half bolted to a W-400 back half.

I guess anything thing is possible . But the front grill don't match the super w6
The story was it worked on Alaskan Hwy then was bought
And used for moving snow I believe it's only had 2 owners
Before I got it . The brass tag said property of something construction company coast to coast but it's very hard to read
Not sure if would be number somewhere on it that would reveal its identity so I can buy a part or two for it . It runs and drives good just need to track down a rear rim as it rusted away from the calcium in tires leaking over time .

Your first and third part numbers only apply to 400, W-400, 450, W-450.
Your second and fifth apply to a large number of models so don't tell us much.
Your fourth, parts catalog unclear as different numbers are listed depending on equipment. List only shows the Super M and Super MTA but it appears the number could show on others.
I don't know what the sixth is, suspect it isn't even a part number.

The relatively big gap in the date codes suggest a frankentractor or at least one that had a major repair done using some used parts.

The engine size indicates 400 rather than 450. The tire size indicates standard tread rather than Farmall.

All considered, I'd say it is a W-400 possibly with some parts from another tractor.

Not sure how to upload the pics onto forum from my iPhone
If you drop me your email I can send them
Thanks for everyone's input

these w series tractors have serial #'s on the left side on flywheel housing. the super w6ta # starts at 10001 to 13006 . if its a brass tag and yellow tractor then that would be a former government tractor as they put a brass tag on them . but the tractor has its own serial #. send me the picture to my # 780-283-0298 and i will tell u what it is.

There is a time limit imposed on new members as far as posting pics. Best thing would be to contact Admin and ask for an exception (common procedure). Otherwise, my email is open if you're using Modern View. This site uses two different software, so if someone has their email open, it's available in either one view or the other - never both.

Yes, sounds like a Frankentractor. These guys know more about tractors than I could ever dream of knowing(!!), but I've done a lot of reading about the Alaskan highway, how it became the Alcan Highway, etc. It was quite common for equipment to become broken down and then abandoned, then used for parts. If your machine is from that era and could be traced back to being used on the building of the highway, it "could" be worth more than you thought. Just guessing on that, as I've never actually heard how many machines "made it out alive", but might be something worth investigating.

Starting to sound like this tractor may have a few secrets about its past , I wonder who else has equipment from that time who could verify what tractors they used and what made it out working
Thanks for everyone's input it's sure interesting
The brass tag located on right side saying something construction company coast to coast but we cannot read everything on it
Anyone else have something similar on thier tractor ??
