Farmall 656D - Clutch

That's a loaded question, ever done any mechanical work before, can you change a clutch, in a Super MTA, for a example? You should have a set, or make a set, of spliting stands.

Just remember turn flywheel replace pto shaft throw out And pilot brgs. And don?t force it together it not to hard you can do it

Tractor mechanics replace clutches in much larger tractors by themselves on a daily basis. Of course they have the benefits of having the right tools, cradles, splitting stands, overhead cranes, and above all, a nice flat concrete floor, indoors, to work on.

Be aware that the tractor must be split in half to do this job, leaving you with two awkward chunks weighing at least 3000lbs apiece. Splitting stands with rollers make handling these pieces fairly simple, but you can make simple straight leg splitting stands out of lengths of heavy C-channel, and roll one half of the tractor away using a heavy floor jack.

(quoted from post at 03:26:47 10/26/17) So tell me how hard it is to replace a clutch in a 656D? Can I do it by myself?
The tractor has to be split so you can get to the clutch. One thing that I do is I hang the new pressure plate and the clutch disc on the transmission shaft and I then roll the two tractor half's together. Working through the access cover on the bottom of the clutch housing I then install the bolts that fasten the pressure plate to the flywheel. This makes it much easier to roll the two half's together, you do not have to align up the splines, and you never have to worry about bending the clutch disc.

Just had the clutch replaced on my Farmall 656 gas last spring.
In addition to the advice already given in thei thread there is one other item. The 4 pad clutch wears fairly quickly especially if the tractor has a loader on it. I replaced it with the 6 pad disk from Hy Capacity for greater life. This clutch feels more responsive when engaging than the original did. As others have said resurface the flywheel, replace the release and pilot bearings, and replace the transmission input seals at the rear in addition to the clutch disk and pressure plate.
