'49 C growling noise

One of my tractors runs just fine but has developed a growling noise while in any of the forward gears. The noise disappears when placed in the reverse gear. It seems to be coming from the mid-section of the tractor. It's definitely not from the engine. Any ideas of what may be causing this and where to start looking?

The ring and pinion can be one source of directional specific noise. Use a automotive stethoscope to assist localizing the sound.
A bearing failure on the counter shaft 43284D and 352399R91 Would allow the pinion to get out of position. Jim

That makes sense. "Thanks" to both of you for your comments.
Now I know where to start looking for the cause of the "growling monster".

Many times (in different pieces of machinery not necessarily tractors) I have found growlers to be bad bearings.

If you had the ability to put the transmission asm on a bench, with the cover opened up, and rotate the input shaft by hand, I bet you could locate the trouble pretty quickly....but the path from here to there is a bit twisty.
