Diesel additives

Bought a 656 diesel that had been sitting for a long time (don't know how long). It runs well. I plan on removing the fuel that is in it, changing the filters, and putting in fresh fuel. After sitting a long time, are there any fuel additives that would benefit the injectors, pump, etc?

dont use ATF.why do u want friction modifiers from the oil wearing out your pump.?? use whats recommended. 2 CYCLE OIL is way better than atf.! i will never put atf in diesel engines.

Main thing, be sure there's no water accumulated in the bottom of the tank from condensation. That's especially important as it's been setting for a long time. You can siphon out from the very bottom of the tank if there's no drain cock.

I have use Lucas fuel conditioner. I'll put 1 quart in like 10 gal of fuel, It does a nice job cleaning up sticky valves inside injector pumps. It
works slowly so put it in run it for a bit let it set for a month or so You should notice a difference when you start it back up.

Is the fuel in the tank clean or is there a lot of algae, rust and water in it? If it's clean, try flushing out the tank with a few gallons of fresh fuel and drain that out to rinse out some of the loose rust and debris in the tank. If you are using good fuel blended for your coldest temperatures, I don't think you need any additives unless the fuel will stay in the tank for a long time.

I use ATF. ATF has an affinity for water and will remove moisture from the tank. It also lubes the pump and adds kinetic energy to the fuel. Why ? A friend of mine was an Allis Chalmers dealer for over 45 years. They always used ATF in diesel tractors if they had sat a while or had moisture in the fuel. Come winter I mix a quart of motor oil in five gallons of diesel and a bottle of deicer to treat fuel for winter. There was a product called 3 in 1 diesel conditioner that I have used. It cleans injectors, lubes the pump and removes moisture

of course you can use ATF in diesel and say it works! but technically u are wearing your pump out. atf is for transmissions and has additives to make the clutches not slip... so go figure it out your self. its 2 cycle oil is the thing to use. or even engine oil. but not atf.

Actually there has been studies showing 2 stroke oil in diesel engines not only is ineffective in providing better lubrication or cetane improvements, but also fuel consumption and engine performance had little if any change. In fact a lot of 2 stroke oil contains miniscule amounts of zinc, which could potentially cause injector clogging. So...yeah I wouldn't use it.
