IH W-30.......throttle - spark advance........

Now that I have the coupler on its way - on to the next issue. Does someone have a W-30 they can post a pic for me on the linkage? There are two levers on the "double shaft" that goes from the steering wheel towards the engine....the first lever - I think- runs the throttle? But I have no linkage for it? The second lever..should run the "spark control" which I do have the rod that attaches to the back of the Mag; I think I can get that but not sure how the linkage runs to the throttle? This tractor also has a tall lever mounted to the right fender....about 2" tall that has a rod going to the engine- this is also the throttle? Not sure here.... Any pic would be great! Thanks!

Most likely someone added a throttling governor to your W30. This allows the tractor to run at any speed between idle and full RPM. I also have a W30 that was changed to the throttling governor. It has a throttle lever with multiple notches to set the speed. The extra lever on the shaft you mention is no longer used but still there. The other original lever is to retard or advance the spark and to ground the mag to stop the engine. I would leave the throttling governor in place since it will allow you to run the engine at any speed. The original governor only allowed running at full RPM or idle. I can take some close-up pictures as the one I have attached does not show enough detail. Al

This is great....thanks! You are very right about the throttle on the right fender- I think I will leave it then if it gives me control of my speed. Is this tractor pre-35? Mine is red....and a '37. Thanks for your help !

My W30 has serial WB16005 which also makes it an early 37. My understanding is that IH started painting tractors red in Oct/Nov of 1936. But I purchased mine from the original owner who said he purchased it in the spring of 1937. Yet when I bought it in 1966, it appeared to have never been repainted and was grey. I confirmed that with the original owner who told me it came new with grey paint and red steel rear wheels. So it does appear that some early 37 tractors were painted grey.

The attached picture shows what it looked like in 1966 when I bought it. It had been standing outside since 1958 when the road past the original owner's farm was blacked topped. He couldn't drive it to his field so he left it stand outside. I had to replace the gas tank so that is why it is red. The other picture is after I painted it in 1967. So it is possible that if the serial number on yours is below 16005, it could have originally been gray. Maybe someone else might have more input on when IH went from grey to red. Al

I will have to look at mine- but it appears to be red from the factory - which is fine with me...thats what it is going to be! lol....why the rubber on the front? and steel on the back ? I assume these tractors did NOT have a temperature gauge? Good pics. Thanks.

I think the air cleaner inlet has been shortened. It should extend 2 to 3 feet above the gas tank. (don't know the exact length)

You are correct. My dad took a section of the air cleaner off when I got it so we could get it in a shop to work on it. Not sure what happened to it, but it has to stay off because it wouldn't go into the shed where I store it. Al

Back when these tractors were new, you could order a tractor with front rubber and rear steel. The 39 F20 my dad bought new came that way. As far as my W30, I think the original owner put front rubber on it since it has cut off spokes. Back then tires were expensive and farmers weren't convinced that rubber would pull as good as steel. Can't ask the original owner as he was well over 70 when I bought it in 1966 and he has long passed away. Al
