I am working on an int 400. wanted to put a mechanical oil pressure gage on it . went to take the fitting out of the block. it happened . I broke it off. tried an easy out but it wouldn't come out. So I drilled the brass fitting out. re-tapped the hole now my question is can I start the tractor and let the oil come out to try to flush the lines from any shavings that might have gotten inside. have no idea how its hooked up inside. welcome all comments. thanks norm

i can see what you are trying to do,,but why start it and cause full oil pressure to shoot oil all over the ,,just crank it over with the starter ,,,,if its gas motor pull the coil wire

Can you tell me if there is just a chamber there. I an going to put vacuum to it first and just turn it over. wasn't planning on letting it start. I am concerned about any of the shavings getting into the oil system but if there is a small chamber there then I wouldn't think any could. guess if I wasn't so carless some times I wouldn't be in this situation. all info appreciated. thanks norm

hi norm,,not sure what is back in that hole,,is it a tunnel or a void i know not..i would take those 6" Q tips and just put enough heavy grease on them to be sticky and only put them in the hole a quarter of a inch at a time and give a slow turn and pull it out and use the next one a quater of inch further until they come out clean, we know only one thing and that is it is a tunnel for some distance or we could not put a tap in it for threads..so if no chips were pushed in past the tunnel the you be ok. remember all the chips that are in the straight part of the tunnel will be pushed out by the oil when you crank it over.. so get on it and forget what might happen..and if your a praying man then a prayer could help more then ya know good luck ,john

If you are not going to start it (good thinking), you might want to pull the spark plugs and rig up a fitting and hose out of the block and into a mason jar. If I had found myself in this pickle I think a lot of what I would be seeking is reassurance and Peace of mind. At least with a mason jar of oil you can look at the offending particles and have some notion of what is coming out.
I also want to say that anyone who has done this for very long has probably done at least this or worse, I sure have. jeff

never thought about the cu-tips or pulling the plugs so it would spin better. good idea. Thanks for your info. Norm

pinball as rustmonger said we've all been there done that and got the t-shirt!! I learned a trick from another old friend of mine who has since passed but I use it every time I'm taking a plug out of an engine to install either a oil guage or water temp, or circ heater. clean up the area around the plug, move any wires etc. out of the way, take a torch and carefully heat the plug to red hot, being carful to keep the tip of the flame on just the plug. when the plug is red hot pull out the torch and walk away for 20 minutes, letting it cool. the rapid expansion and contraction of the heat cool will bust the grip the rust has on the plug. after 20 minutes go back with the wrench or socket give the plug a bump and it will roll out with just your fingers. this method has worked well for me.
