From the 340 parts on line manual!!
367857R91 CAP ASSEMBLY, oil filler It is where one adds engine oil! Jim

Just looks like old style valve cover oil cap. Should be able to get at any parts place.

When you need oil for your motor that's where you add it to your engine. Power steering is the transmission oil. At least it is on my 340 backhoe. Go to tractor house dot com (do a search on the net )and you will find several 340 that are in salvage yards across the us. I'm sure if you send them a photo some one will fix you up. might find one close to you. Until you get that cap put a rag or something over it. you need t keep dirt/moisture out of it.

Looks very similar to the caps found on the pto hyd
pumps for cyclo planters. Also used on the starting
gas tanks on gas start diesels. Make sure your
sitting down when you price one at the dealers

That is where you put oil in the engine when you are changing oil and/or when the dipstick indicates to add oil.

It is a much more convenient place than the breather on top of the valve cover. That's where you'd put the oil on older versions of that engine.

Highly recommend you get a reprint owner's manual from this site or another fine reproducer of owner's manuals. Knowing where the engine oil goes is the FIRST thing you should know about any tractor you own.

Well you say engine oil goes in somewhere else? I don't know what to say to that. I'm attaching a
link to the CaseIH online parts book where Jim gave you the oil cap number from. As you can see
it closely resembles the part you are showing where the engine oil cap goes. There is a gear in
there that drives the governor and distributor. That gear runs off the camshaft gear. By normal
design convention the front engine drive gears are lubicated the engine oil. Basically there is no
way to separate the front gear case from the engine crankcase, so if oil is poured into the opening shown it
ends up in the oil pan. There is a bit of a discrepancy on the IH parts page that labels the page
shown as "diesel"; a Diesel engine would not have a governor it is an integral part of the diesel
injection pump. Hope this helps, I to would recommend that you purchase an operators manual for
your tractor.

That is the ENGINE oil fill cap.I grew up on a 340u,and THAT is where you add and fill THE ENGINE with oil. And the oil filter is in the canister just behind the distributor cap.Mark

tx for the assist guys
ordered the cap
yes ur right about oil placement
mixed up tractors...

quick question how much oil to change
2.2L engine gas

If it a problem putting the oil in the engine through that hole since the loader is in the way there is no problem adding it through the breather tube on the valve cover.
