W-30.....F-4 mag timing....?

I'm ready to install my F-4 mag( bought off this site- said it is in good shape and ready to work) - I "do have" the book on this also; the book says there are several things I have to do? Take the cap off - remove some hook- adjust some shims - do this - do that - ....is this right? or can I just set the timing on the flywheel and hook it up? Kinda confusing- never done this before...your help is appreciated. Thanks.

Remove #1 plug and stick finger in hole,Turn crank until air is felt coming out of the hole that your finger is in.That should be #1 TDC.Set mag to #1 and bolt in place

#1 cyl. position is at 2 oclock position as with all of these mccormick and international tractors.
firing order 1 3 4 2.

you need to remove the 2 1/4 inch bolts on the coupler and then line up the coupling where ever it matches the mag. number one starts at 2 oclock. dont know how else to explain that position. that is looking at the mag from seat. the holes on the coupling is your fine tuning also. like not hard to do.

ok..... here is what im not understanding; I took off the mag that was on it- which was running fine- to replace with original F-4 Mag- why should the coupler need to be "moved" to fit the mag as it was running fine the way it was? Dont be too critical- this is first time for me with this set up. Thanks.

I take it that the mag that was on it was not an F-4? Anyway, thats why it was mentioned to reset the coupler.
I'm pretty thorough about mag timing because i don't like hospitals and we use our tractors for plowing and belt work whenever we can, so too far advanced can kick and too far retarded can run hot.
I like to remove the valve cover to identify number one cylinder in the firing position, upstroke after the intake valve closes. If i don't want to pull the cover i will pull the side cover and watch the lifter position. The owners' manual is really specific on timing and is a good guide. Most all of my tractors are crank start, after 34 years of cranking my back can tell you timing, good spark , fuel and adjustments are critical. These will all make your experience with antique tractors the best possible.
