I'm trying to help friends of mine whos husband recently passed and who own a IH 284 that won't start. what do you need to do when changing a coil with external resistor to one that has internal resistor. Also if someone could help me with info on Plug gap, Point gap / Dwell and timing also what kind of oil and filter does this tractor need NAPA couldn't help me. I'm old but I can still do some of these things if someone could help me get this information. My friends wife is trying to get this tractor running so her 13yr.old grandson can use it to mow grass around the farm

Did you ask her if her husband had the Owner's Manual? People in that type of situation often don't even think to look for it.

they bought it used several years ago and from my understanding do not have any paper work or owners manual on it. He put a Pertronix MA-141 replacement kit for the points and condenser it lasted about 10 months. He bought another one and installed it and that's the one in there now. It's about a year on this one. I tested the coil with an external resistor and did not get a reading on the low side but on the high side I did. I replaced it with a coil that has a built in internal resistor, the wire that was on the plus side of old coil I put on plus side of new coil and the wire that went to top of the external resistor " I don't know what to do with it, it's not alive with power?
