I am working on an international 404. I have a delco remy gen/alt on it. it is not wired up. has the letter f on one terminal. I do not see where a voltage regulator was ever on the tractor. How can you tell if its a generator or alternator and how would you wire it up. thanks norm

AFAIK, all the factory used was a generator. (As you know, generators are steel/iron, and alternators are aluminum.)

This is what the parts catalog shows...<img src = "http://cnh-b2b.ptcmanaged.com/index.php/sbsimage/CSIH/default/1167665.png">

You can see where the regulator is mounted in this photo. (Beneath and a bit to the rear of the "L" in "INTERNATIONAL".)

Sounds like I need to get me an alternator. didn't know steel meant generator. my manual said there was an regulator but I couldn't find one. Nice looking tractor you have. thanks norm

Diagram I have of a 404 shows it using a charge indicator light, not an ammeter.

If you get an alternator, get a 3 wire Delco from 1980's GM vehicle or a Hitachi from late 70, early 80's Datsun/Nissan.

Remove generator and regulator. Alternator will have internal regulator.

Bat wire from old regulator to output of alternator, loop #2 on Delco or Sense connector on Hitachi to output of alternator. Connect output of charge indicator light to #1 on Delco or L on Hitachi.

If you use a one wire alternator you lose the indicator light function.
