1466 Starting Poorly

I have a 1466 that I've owned for 35 years. It has just under 5000 hrs. I use it mostly for fall tillage. It always started right up every time I use it. I was disking recently and was done for the day. I throttled down to let the motor cool before shutting it off. It completely stopped when I moved the lever toward idle. I didn't have the throttle lever in off position. I tried to restart it and it wouldn't. I had to give it a sniff of ether to get it to fire. Being the end of the day, I shut down and walked away from it until the next day. Now, it will not start at all without a sniff of ether, no matter what the outside temp is. It runs like it should after it gets running and I am still using it. Any thoughts why this happened suddenly, and what is the cause?? Do I have the beginnings of an injector or pump issue? Thanks.

Most likely a worn injection pump head like IHtim mentioned. First shows up as hard starting hot. There's also a chance the excess fuel cylinder is stuck out too, will cause the same trouble. ALWAYS open the throttle at least 1/3 on M100 pumps or the excess fuel feature will not work. Must be done whether hot or cold.

Hard to believe the head went from good to junk after one day of field work without help from water or bad fuel. I would want to check the supply pump to see if you are getting any pressure at low speed, or start up. You can install a tee and a gauge at the head of the pump on the inlet line. You should get about 20 Psi or so with the starter. A bad pump, or plugged filters will cause low pressure at start up. If you do need a new head dont let anyone bend you over. About 750 bucks should get you a rebuilt head installed and a reseal job. I have done a bunch this summer. Must be the year for model 100 pumps. Good luck Al
