130 Electrics

Hi all,

Bought a 130 that had been converted to 12v and has a key ignition rather than a pull rod. I knew the electrics were shaky as the lights didn't work and unless you disconnected the battery it would drain within a day but it would start and the alternator would charge.

Now it won't turn over. When I turn the key a terminal on the starter started glowing cherry red.....i released the key rather quickly. No noise from the starter either.

Any ideas?

Is it possible the starter is jammed and can't turn, pinion jammed into the ring gear.

To troubleshoot, can do 1 of 2 techniques
1. remove starter being careful of live wires (disconnect battery B+ or ground strap first)
2. Jack up one rear wheel, put transmission in top/highest numerical road gear and attempt to rock the rear wheel back and forth gently to assess whether the engine is "loose".

Hot connections must be the first repair. Possibly needs a new terminal end. If no sound came from the process (heat or not) the starter may be jammed as noted by Matt. Jim
