Hydraulic controls

This has probably been asked before but I couldn't find anything helpful. So how do you operate the hydraulics on the M? Do you just pull that rod on the right until it catches on the tooth? And what position should it be in when you're just driving the tractor? Does it matter?

That 'old' belly pump is one way only. Pull the rod all the way out to 'engage'/raise.Release to the stop to hold. Push all the way down to release. Let it always be clear down, except when raiseing an implement.

(quoted from post at 23:43:39 10/15/17) That 'old' belly pump is one way only. Pull the rod all the way out to 'engage'/raise.Release to the stop to hold. Push all the way down to release. Let it always be clear down, except when raiseing an implement.

So do you just lift the rod until it catches on that tooth, or pull farther?

Other than pulled all the way out, the oil circulates through open valving so either on the little stop,
or pushed in all the way. If you are using the hydraulics to do lifting, do not consider it a human safe
lift. it is not, no hydraulic lift should be worked under. The front left and right elbows are connected
together internally and the left rear is best ignored unless you use an implement that needs delayed
lower on a rear cylinder. (not likely). Don't pull out the rod with nothing attached, it needs a place
to push the oil. As Delta indicates, the system pushes oil out to lift or do a job, and then the fluid
is allowed back in through that single connection. Lift only and gravity return. (or springs) Jim

Pull the rod past the tooth till the implement is raised. then let rest on the stop. to lower,Push/let fall to the lowest point past the stop.

Get a feel for the lever. It should have three distinct positions. Neutral, where it wants to be when you're not holding it, pulled towards you to raise under pressure, and pushed away from you to lower by gravity.

The tooth is there if you have a two-way valve in the system for pressure up/pressure down operation. Do not leave it there unless you have the two way valve installed.

A lot depends how the control lever is mounted on the side of the tractor. The way I am used to using the hydraulic unit after 100s of hours on an H and M is:
All the way down/forward - lower the unit by gravity. In other words, release the hydraulic pressure.
All the way up/to rear - raise the unit using hydraulic pressure. The control rod should stay up until the unit is completely raised at which time the control rod will return to the "Notch" position by itself.
At the notched position, the unit will stay where it is - all the way up or down.
If you have a two-way "Christmas Tree" for two-way hydraulics, lock the hydraulic unit control rod all the way up and use the control rod on the Christmas Tree for up or down pressure.

Not a flame!! the rod stop tooth is the hold position and is not a pressure position at all. It is most normal to have it positioned there when running
the tractor, and when holding an implement or loader up. Jim

Simply, in the forward position or center with pin
resting behind (back of tractor) lift rod guide is fine
for using tractor with no hydraulic needs. On
another note, the belly pump only provides lift or
pressure when the clutch is out.

No, the "Tooth" is "Neutral" that you may use when moving with the implement up. It will hold the implement up when traveling.
With a supplemental valve called a Christmas Tree, you should have the control rod all the way up so that you are pumping into the two-way valve.
