Starter question

Ih 3616 backhoe with the d236 engine, pulled the starter so I could double check the number of teeth on the starter drive to order the right one. Starter I found that says its for the diesels has a 9 tooth drive gear. The one I pulled outta my machine has a 10 tooth drive. Found the 10 tooth replacement and that says its for gas application. So, do I order a 9 tooth or a 10 tooth? I don't want to order the wrong one and have to pull it again. It wasn't much fun

seams to me you were having starter trouble before with this machine and you got it as is. so a person does does not know what starter the other guy has installed. i would trust the book first. COUNT the flywheel teeth also and go from there.

Yes same machine. I want to do a compresson test on it so I'll have to fix the starter. I'll count the teeth on the ring gear after work tomorrow

Some are bigger and some are same diameter. Lot of mix ups on 656 and 706 gas tractors. I personally have not run into the mixup on his model.

There is a 10 mm difference in the size between the 2 gears. I'm thinking there is a possibility that they offset they housing a tad bit to make them interchangeable? I'm tempted to order the 9 tooth and compare it.

Cant you measure the distence from tooth to tooth then do the same as the starter drive. Even take the bejdix off and check if it matches counting the teeth on the flywheel doesent matter if the drive and ring gear teeth dont match
