300U/ 350U FH Carryall

Hello all,
I am making a carryall for my utilities, and after reviewing the existing posts and the OEM IH pictures, came away with one question-
How much depth front to back would be useful before it becomes cumbersome and unhandy? I will make it 72" wide, and was thinking of 48" between the face of the front boards and the back edge of the back floorboards, so I could lay plywood sheets flat and cart them around the place, but after laying it out full size, it seems a wee bit deep.
Anyone have experiences they would like to share?
Thanks in advance for any help, jeff

Standard for the Farmall 100 and two point small prong for the Super C, 200, and 230 tractors was two 2" x 8" high and three 2" x 8" planks for the bottom. That gives about 22 inches of useful floor space. My memory says that the large point carryalls were four planks for the floor or approximately 30 inches deep. Much more than that and one will have a motorized teeter totter.

i put new boards on a factory large prong frame. floor depth was limited by the stake pockets, though if the rear plank was notched for the stakes, a little more depth could be added. i'll admit, it is sometimes short.

When my Dad and uncle bought my 300u,it came with the factory carry-all,which was about 2' deep.It had 2 slots that you could drop short 2x4s in to keep the load from falling off.Well it was too short,so they added 2 more feet of floor to the rear and made it real useful. It has hauled everything imaginable. One of my first tractor driving jobs was to drive the tractor while Dad cut the bales of hay and tossed them off a slab(flake) at a time to feed the cows in a dry summer.Later we raised sugar corn and fed the fodder to the cows, loading and hauling it on the carry-all.Because of the fast hitch, you unhook whatever was on the tractor and hook up the carry-all very quickly.
With the hi-loader on the front you could put a good sized load on the carry-all,but without front weight, you have to be careful how much weight you put on because the front end of the tractor will rear up.
Mine still has the original front face boards, but the floor has been replaced. The boards are 2x8s I believe, and there is angle iron around the edge to protect the board edges. And there is a front face/front rest about 4'high made of steel also.Mark

For my 300U, I use a empty fast hitch drawbar, then I got a pair of used, clamp-on pallet forks for a loader bucket, and secured them on the fast hitch drawbar. Now I slip into a pallet for a carry-all. Or just use the forks if that's what I need.
