Gas Disappearing

My friend has a Farmall H that has gas disappearing. He shuts the gas off at the sediment bowl but the next time he uses it there isn't any gas in it. The tractor is located in a locked shed. What is causing this problem?
 
How long between uses? Gas evaporates. Does he keep it near empty or with lots of gas in it? If it's kept near empty, it could be losing it from evaporation depending on the length of time between uses.
 
If he can't find any leaks he might check crankcase oil level if leaking pass shut of and getting past needle valve. If all is ok than there is somebody finding their way into the shed. It would have to set a long time to evaporate.
 
I have a JD 40c that when I want to use it I put in a gallon or so of gas, and the next time I go to use it it is gone, maybe 1-3 months later. I figure there's only a quart or two left in there and it must be evaporating since I use it so rarely.

you shut it off at the sediment bowl so the only place the gas can go is thru the carb the needle must be stuck and it will fill up and then run out of the weep hole in the carb throat. It cannot go up into the engine. Mite have the aircleaner bowl full also not much gas will be gone as the fuel is shut off at the sediment bowl. So remove the bottom of the aircleaner and see if thats where it has went.
 
i had that problem one time last year ,,now im a bit old so when i used the tractor i d start it and turn off my hearing aids,well don t ya know i got off with the tractor after backing it in shed running and went home.month later it was bone dry ,it wasn1t til i see the switch on that i realized i got off and not having hearing aids on and never heard it running and locked the door,,
 
just because he is shutting off the valve at the sediment bowl doesn't mean the valve is actually sealing , and the carb could be leaking past the needle and seat and the gas leaking out the weep hole on the bottom of the carb onto the ground, these things are old and parts wear out. That or his shed isn't as secure as he thinks.
 
put a big sheet of cardboard under the tractor and check it in a few days, if its leaking, there will be discoloration on the cardboard.
 
My first guess would be, the shut off valve is not sealing and gas seeps through it even though it is shut off. The needle valve in carb is also seeping and letting gas into carb. Carb overfills and leaks out seep hole in bottom of carb. To check it, remove glass portion of sediment bowl, and see if gas comes out when valve is shut off. To check carb needle valve, remove air filter pipe from carb and turn gas on. See if gas comes out of carb.
 
Tell him to shut the valve and take the line loose after the valve and see if any gas comes out. that would eliminate the leaking valve, If it isn't leaking then your either losing it through evaporation or someone is stealing it. check the gas cap to make sure it still has the rubber gromlet in it so it seals like its suppose to.
 
I have two tractors where the sediment bowl shutoff is only a "suggestion." Really it only slows the flow of fuel to the carburetor, and the carburetor apparently leaks a little. Left long enough the fuel runs out, and there is no smell or evidence of gas on the floor.
 
Two of my tractors were always empty also. I stuffed a small piece of grocery bag under the nut that the shut off stem sticks out of, and now they hold the gas in.
