200 Overhaul Questions

Well its about time to do an overhaul. Finally saved up enough. So I have been reading these forums last few years trying to absorb info, to learn. Hopefully some of you can help me out before I start this winter.

'55 Farmall 200 C123 Engine

1. After I get block, head, and crank ready for the machine shop; what should be the minimal work done as needed? Cleaned, magnafluxed, head work as needed?

2. What type of bearings should I get? I plan on working this tractor. Best to get machine shop to get them?

3. Low ash oil and no eth-gas 89 good for the engine? Been reading about forged vs cast pistons on here.. Don't think you could find forged anymore.

Thanks for any help/advice. This will be my first overhaul.
 
Clean all bolt holes with a flat bottom tap.Clean all bolts that are reused on a wire wheel.Lightly lube bolt threads, at least the head bolts,before installing,and torquing.Mark
 
Thanks glennster and Mark. Will do both. Should head gasket be metal surfaced? Fiber ones dont last?
 
Most of the parts you use for the engine are going to depend on what you can get. You're assuming a variety of choices that are not necessarily there.

When I got a head gasket for my 240, I got "a head gasket." There was no choice of metal or fiber, sequins or glitter... It was the only one anyone sold. It was metal faced, BTW and the same one you'd be using on your 200.

Don't let concerns about later "high" compression 6-cylinder engines confuse you about the choices on your older low compression 4-cylinder engine. That's where forged vs. cast comes from. Whatever pistons you get for your tractor will work fine because they are not going to be stressed like the ones in the later 6-cylinder engines. It's not an issue with your engine.

Like others have said, let the machine shop get the bearings so you will be sure they fit properly. In fact it might not hurt to throw him a bone and let him source the entire engine overhaul kit for you.
 
Thanks Barnyard E, might get shop to get the parts. If not then from here. Just wanted to be sure before I dropped money.
