W-30 Steering adjust - repost...

I posted a few days back- need to clear up what to do please. (to the guy who said I could "herd cats" with this tractor- thanks...may try that")...... I have replaced/rebuilt all steering components now- tires and wheels back on- all is good except-still an inch of play in gear box where steering arm attaches. So- if I disconnect the steering arm from side of tractor- there are 4 or 6 cap screws; do I pull them out and remove this assembly to rotate a bearing or something to lessen the play in the gear? I have no book on this guys...just would like to have it with less play. Thanks .

from what i can see on mine is that once you pull that arm off and the sector shaft cover there is shims it looks like on both sides of the next plate. looks to me this is the sector shaft adjustment to worm gear to get the proper clearance. looked at a few of mine and there is different thicknesses on each tractor. and the free play is anywhere from 45 degrees to about 20 degrees on the steering wheel a couple which is very good for these old tractors. not like you have 180 degrees and trying to steer it. what does yours have?

you have "replaced/rebuilt all steering components" you would have seen the shims for adjusting the play. as that is how its done.

..sounds logical; I will take out the 6 large bolts and pull it out- or move it out..to see the shims. Not sure what the three smaller bolts are...but will be apparent if I remove it. Thanks for the help.
