340 Utility Fast Hitch surges up/down

OK. I'm confused why the Fast Hitch lift/lower controls don't seem to be able to find a happy spot where the arms will stay put. I'll lift them to the height I need, re-center the control handle, and the arms will surge up or down, stay put there for a moment, and surge again. That could be a real issue if depth is critical for what I'm doing, or if somebody is behind the tractor and it surges- moving the implement up/down. Frustrated.

If you lift an implement and shut off the tractor will the implement drift down to the ground? If so the teledepth system might be adjusting for the dropping of the hitch. If this is the case, it can be either the piston in the hitch cylinder, or the valving (less likely) causing it. Jim

Well, it does it even when it's empty. Nothing in the fast hitch arms at all. Under load, once you find the 'sweet spot', it stays put where you leave it. The hard part is finding the sweet spot that makes it stop raising or lowering.

A worn link in the Telledepth system (not real well designed) will cause it. With care, look at the components while it is doing
it. A loose linkage or worn pin can make it hunt. Jim

Thanks, my friend. I'm just concerned that someone might get hurt if it's hunting around for a happy spot when we're working with it. I'll look over all the linkage and report back with what I find.
Have a great Memorial Day weekend!

My 460U does the same thing, and I have never fixed it yet, just sort of mess with the lever until it stops making "big" moves. It is frustrating to want to drop the box blade down 1" and it is trying to move it 6" instead.

I really looked at it like a safety issue; somebody might be within reach of an implement when the hitch starts "hunting around" and I'll guarantee who's gonna win that fight- the implement 100% of the time.
My Tel-a-depth handle is stuck, and I've got to get it freed up to figure out how much slop is in all the linkages, so I can make it stay put where I put the lift handle. My tractor (3635 SVY) has been repainted and I'm finding that certain things just got painted over instead of disassembled and painted. So the paint is sticking it all together in places.
For Janicholson- Jim, do you have the ability to decode the SVY codes on mine? I know the 3635 is a 1960, but I don't know what the V and Y are. S is likely Power Steering... V might be the 3-valve hydraulics, and no clue for the Y.

I know the S is provision for Torque Amplifier and
independent pto. The other two are in the owners manual. Jim

From Guy Fay's IH Tractor Data Book which is widely accepted as being correct:
S is as Jim noted - TA with provisions for 540 independent PTO.
V indicates exhaust valve rotators.
Y Hyda-Touch low and reverse attachment (with 12 gpm pump).

Fast hitch update:
Well, I found that the rod that runs over the top of the transmission to the Tel-a-Depth valve doesn't move as well as it should. Cleaning, Lubricating, etc helped.
Now if it starts "hunting" I can wiggle the rod to the valve, and it quits. Also, it seems like it's doing it less, now that I'm using the tractor more and it's being exercised more regularly... kinda like the rest of us, we seem to work better with a little exercise! 8)

Now, the next projects are on to a carb kit, and maybe electronic ignition before the snow flies.

Side note- I just bought a Massey-Ferguson Model 41 3-point "Dynabalance" 7' sickle mower to keep the ditch banks under control next spring!
