International 504 Utility Fast Hitch Questions

I bought a 504 utility a few weeks ago and I found when pulling my brush mower, the fast hitch drawbar wanted to move back and forth a lot. There appears to be some sort of an adjuster or rod missing. See the photos and the youtube video.

I can't tell from the parts breakdown on the Case/IH website exactly what I need, so I'm hoping someone can tell me the part I need. Thanks in advance! https://youtu.be/seTpGsJ9j1M

I am not sure what the piece you have pointed to attaches to,but the side to side motion of the drawbar/fast hitch is controlled by the part that is attached to your right side fast hitch receiver. In your pic,I can see the pin that is pulled for 'swinging' action, and installed for 'rigid'. However, this style fast hitch has many wear points, and never is very rigid, even when pinned.Take your foot and push the drawbar side to side and you will see all the motion that is due to wear; then pull the pin and you will see more movement side to side. You probably ccould shim some of the wear with large washers to reduce the side to side movement.
The excess movement is usually not a problem going forward, but it can be backing up.Mark

If you look up a 340 international it will show the parts 6,7,8,9 that would correspond to some of the missing parts of the draft control, usually it has a cam on the lift cylinder. The problem, is that the
rockshaft that lifts the unit is different. You could disable that by making a 1/2 plate with two holes that would reach from the lever to the bolt hole behind it and bolt it solid with 3/4 inch hardened
bolts. It looks like you have a combination of parts from other tractors to give what you have. I am familiar with older units and the 544/656 are different.

Can't remember for sure if that hole was ever used on a 504 with 2 point. Not even sure if original 504 U hitch anchor was like yours.

Second what D Slater said. I haven't been around the 504, so just going by the books. That part doesn't look like the drawing in the 504 parts, does look like the 340. The arm with the unused hole is part of the 340 traction control that isn't part of the 504 hitch. Anchoring that arm (or getting the correct 504 part) will help your loose hitch problem.

I'm starting to wonder now if that may be from another tractor. I looked a 340 utility and couldn't find anything but a 300 utility shows that pivot bracket for a traction control lever. I definitely don't have a lever. I think the suggestion to anchor it permanently might be the best idea. I'll probably just fab up something to hold it in place.

It is in the 340 catalog, under drawbars and hitches, assembly "(263) - DRAWBAR AND HITCHES, TRACTION CONTROL 340 SERIES". The drawing is essentially like the one you found and posted.

Found this picture, looks like the hitch eye link may be welded to mounting plate. Can't tell for sure but no reason for a 504 to move there.

I guess I could just weld mine up. That's from a listing on Ebay and it almost appears as though it's been cut off and welded. My little 110 wire feed welder probably wouldn't do it. Might have to fire up the Syncrowave 300 and TIG it.

A part on eBay that is labeled 504 probably came off of a 504, but doesn't mean that IH put it there. You may be looking at somebody else's fix for the same problem you are now facing. (This doesn't mean it is a bad fix.)

marcus, my 240 utility has the same problem as you, missing some parts. i have to figure a bracket out to stop that rod from moving back and
forth. with the bush hog on, it bottoms out the pto shaft when backing up.

Mark, your analysis is absolutely correct. There are three main points of wear.
The pivot eye that fastens to the right socket can be welded up where it is worn, and the hole rebushed (steel bushing and a grease fitting it never had. The hole in it is also an issue and its pin and the holes in the plates. These need to be drilled out to a larger size and pinned to fit. The hole in the center that is for the removable pin also should be drilled and a larger hardened pin inserted with across pin through its lower end to retain it. If the round lower cross member that stabilizes the whole system is worn, it too should be tightened up to reduce slop. It should have grease fittings. The draft control on this series of fast hitch was probably controlled by a linkage similar to that shown for a 300-350, but without the D handle and notched control. None of them worked as well as modern draft control systems and locking the rocker follower under the cylinder and linking it to the front lever shown is OK. finding a way to adjust the position of that lever will allow angle of attack adjustment on the prong sockets and is not trivial. This is the best info I have. Jim

In the first pic---at the lower right, there is a bracket
on the fast hitch frame that has 2 flat straps with a pin
through it. That goes to the round shaft beneath the belly
of the tractor.

We never had a 504, but the 450 had the same arrangement as
this for preventing side to side movement.
Ours got really bad, & between washers & welding, we got a
lot of play out of it.

The bail bracket assy shown in your picture is the correct one. The IH part number is 384613R91. It is shown on page 246 of the 504 utility parts catalog. The bail bracket shown on the tractor is from a 340 tractor as shown in the 340 utility parts manual. The 340 Fast Hitch had traction control with the handle and triangular bar. The 504 utility Fast Hitch did not have draft control and that is why the bracket is welded up as in your photo. The simple solution is to insert a small piece of steel in the slop area an weld it to both the bracket and the pivot.
