IH 574 engine in a IH 454

Hi guys I have a 454 that is going to need a lot of engine and injector work really soon
My question is if I could find a complete engine out of a 574 would it fit in the 454 frame and front end
The extra hp with the 574 engine would be a welcome upgrade if it would work
Thanks for any advice

Not sure if it is a bolt up deal or not. The 454 was a 3 cylinder engine and the 574 is a 4 cylinder engine. I suppose if you were to put them together at the clutch it might work out ok. I would want the whole front end for fit and convenience.

The C200 or a D239 are probably gonna be
fairly pricey, even just for an unknown
running parts yard engine. I'd bet for a
running C200 alone, you would be in it for
around $1500, and for a D239, I know the
local parts yard has a couple running
D239's that need rebuilt for $2250 and
$2500. Probably would be cheaper to put
your money in your engine, less screwing
around, and then you know what you have. A
574 has much more power than it needs if it
runs well, more power than tire, unless you
ballast it to the max.

Hi Russell, Is the 454 Gas or Diesel? If it is gas you probably have a better chance of swap fit without much work.
I know the 3 cyl Diesel D-179 is about 3 inches shorter than the D-239. 454 vs 574, everything from clutch back is the same but
some of the difference is made up by the 454 front bolster is longer than 574. Another candidate Diesel engine is the 4 cyl D-
206 found in 474,584,595 and 3230. It is about 50 HP.
As one of the other posts said about putting a D-239 in a 454 the wheel/tires sizes would have to be up-sized if you were using
it on hilly ground and pulling heavy loads. I know this for a fact as when Dad bought his 454 Diesel in 1972 the dealer had
opened the IP up to be the same HP as 464. He had 14.9 x 28 rears with full calcium and 1 set of cast iron weights but on hills
the tractor had lots of power but not traction. The next spring he upgraded rears to 16.9 x 28, put a 6 pad clutch from 574 and
that made a tractor out of the 454.

See attachments of parts of front bolsters for 454 and 574 from caseih.com parts.

Thanks for the information on this guys
Changing the motor out will be more trouble than it's worth
I'm not sure what we will do with the 454 yet
