I have a super M. The single valve hydraulic valve tree that was on these tractors would leak down rather quickly. I have rebuilt thehydraulic reservoir with new springs and balls as it would trip the lever with very little load but would work when locked in place. I plan to replace the single valve tree with a new 2 spool valve. This will operate the single cylinder for the 3pt hitch and one aux line. I would like for the cylinders it controls to be double acting. In other words pressure in both up and down.

Question.
Is this possible with this pump? What type of valve do I need as I see several options? Anyone have any pictures of a similar setup for routing hoses?
Thanks.

I have four set up as you ask.Get an 'open center' spool valve.a two spool, with one spool with a 'float' position for controlling 3 point. I use the original reservoir under the gas tank.Pull the suction from the tank to the pump. Then pressure to the valve. the return oil back to tank.Do not use ANY of the original valveing. In fact,I removed all of the original valveing, even stripped out the reservoir too. Had this setup on a SuperM for over 30 years. Super H just has one valve set for one way only. 400 is like the superM A 'straight' M(with belly pump set up for cultivator) has 3 spools/One set for one way,two spools for 2 way.

Three(400;SM;SH) of the tractors use the original factory 'mag'(live) pump. The one M uses a belly pump with the lever fastened(bolted) always one.It feeds(the valve) from the hose port on the right side, the return is through the drain plug. What you want is a continuous flow of oil through the valve, back to the reservoir.

The modern open center spool valves you can purchase today function exactly the same as the original "Christmas tree" valve. Just connect the new valve in place the same way as the old valve was connected. Pressure from the pump to the "IN" port, and return from the OUT port to the fill on the reservoir.

So if I get a 2 or 3 spool open center valve. I'll be able to set each valve up as 1 way, 2way, or float as you mentioned. Is that right?

Yes I don't plan to use any of old Christmas tree valve.

Float is a feature that a valve may or may not have. It releases the pressure on the hydraulic cylinder and allows it to extend and retract freely. Typically it is used to allow an implement to "float" along the ground, following the contours. Hence the reason it is called float. It is also handy for disconnecting implements without shutting off the tractor to release hydraulic pressure.

Most spool valves are either one way or two way, and cannot easily be converted between. Usually you have to tear the valve apart and change internal parts.
