M pto shaft remove and replacement

My buddy removed his PTO unit from his M to replace a leaking seal. I wasn't there for the teardown and now we can't get the shaft back on the inner splined drive. Sorry for my lack of proper nomenclature but its the PTO unit that had to come out because the seal is internal. It's more or less flush with the reared of the tractor. It's not the protruding style. We have tried several approaches and have had no success. There must be something we are missing. Searching here brought no real answers. Thanks in advance for your replies.
 
When I removed mine it was a tricky to reinstall but possible.
You will have to turn the pto and push down to raise the inside
to mate back with the tranny.
 
Slip a pipe over the end of the shaft so you can better manage the internal end. Also, make sure there was not an adaptor inside that fell off when removing pto. Some times the lower transmission shaft was changed and then an adaptor with the two big lugs fits in the end of that shaft. Not likely, but a possibility.
 
I did it like Pete said, put a piece of pipe over the pto [external] splines and after about 3 hrs of jabbing, i got lucky, or else you got to take the top cover off!
 
Follow up to PTO installation: We took out the two short studs and put in longer bolt stock to help as guides. We didn't have a proper size pipe so used large vise grips to steer or guide the assembly into place. Also we fished around with a recovery magnet in the gear lube and found the thrust washer that had fallen off the shaft at the transmission end, I read in a service manual that some units were equipped with one. After about 30 minutes of making guide bolts and getting the thrust washer and gaskets in place, it took about 10 to 15 minutes to fish the male end of the shaft into the splined tranny drive. She is back together and works like a charm!
