1466 rebuild --- startup

I need expert help! When I started my 1466 after turning the crank, rebuilding the head, replacing # 3 cylinder, all the bearings & seals, and a new rack. The tractor went wide open. I had to smother the intake to kill it. IT SCARED THE HELL OUT OF ME. So that must be why it had a broken rocker arm, broken valves, and a hole in no. 3 piston. So what has happened to the injection pump? thank you for your help.

The M100 injection pump has a slip clutch feature built into the governor weight assembly. Have a 1066 pump on the test stand now that had the same trouble. Engine run away can also be caused be a stuck control unit in the pump, or lube oil in the intake manifold too. Best get the pump serviced to make sure it's not the cause so it does not happen again..

When you tore down how is the camshaft was number three piston scored and was the rocker arm broke on number three international had a bad problem of camshaft going out and they had bad rocker arms to and they make extra Oilers on the towers of the rocker arms

In reply, #3 was not scored, but the crank was worn on #3 . I think the piston hit a valve. I'm just guessing. I bought it cheep. The engine must be in great shape now or it would have shelled. It really sounded strong, but I don't know how many rpm's it was turning.

There were a few of those pumps that have caused engine runaways. The fuel return elbow on original pumps had a check valve that would come apart and work it's way back into the pump. If it lodged under the control sleeve there was no controlling engine speed. Happened to my brother in laws 1486. Didn't slow down until the rod came out and knocked the pump off the tractor. I always changed every tractor that came into the shop that had original style elbow. Changed elbow had just a fixed orfice hole.

Ah yes, the brass return valve VA8518A caused lots of 66 series pump problems with both over speed when the pieces got under the metering sleeve, and hydraulic head seizures. Have been seeing lots of worn governor slip clutch bushings lately..
