Anyone have any tricks for removing the steering wheel. I got the nut off but it looks different than any I have taken off. doesn't look as though theres is any thread in the nut or the shaft. Anyone ever taken one off of an international 300 utitlity tractor. thanks Norm

If you are replacing with a new one I use a 4 1/2 inch grinder with a .045 thick cutting wheel. split it along the keyway if possible.

If there's no thread, that means they've been stripped out.

Getting the wheel itself off is pretty simple, just get your 3-jaw puller in under the hub and give it a tug. Might need to heat. In extreme cases you may need to split the hub, but new wheels are plentiful and relatively inexpensive.

As for fixing the threads, the only fix that doesn't involve taking the steering shaft off the tractor is tack welding the nut back on after the new steering wheel is installed. Otherwise you can take the shaft off and replace with a good used one. Another possible fix is taking the shaft to a machinist and having them turn it and thread it for the next size smaller nut, or build it up with weld then turn and thread it back to the stock size. Regardless, you need a new nut.

If threads are gone drill a 5/16 hole in the center of the shaft an tap it for 3/8 coarse thread. Then use a washer with the bolt to hold the wheel. It doesn't take a lot of strength to hold the wheel on. I've done it several times with no problems afterwards.
