W-30 Steering box.....

My book shows nothing on "adjusting the steering gear" on this ol beast...... and I see no adjust either. Just would like to take some play out of the gear box.....thanks.

We all would like to take play out of Farmall steering. I don't think there is a way. I tried all sorts of ways on my "H", shimming the worm gear over, grinding off parts of the shoulders inside the steering box, etc etc etc. Nothing really worked. Bought new worm gear and that fixed it.

The mesh adjustment is controlled by the eccentrically bored inner bearing. To reduce backlash, remove the bearing-to-housing cap screws and rotate the bearing until backlash is removed but not so much as to cause binding at any point of rotation of the steering wheel. Disconnect drag link from pitman arm before adjustment.

My W30 has a lot of slop. According to the manual you can turn the gear around on the inside and use some new teeth. I haven't tried it yet. I used mine on a corn binder one year and it was crazy trying to drive a straight line following a row with it.

Ok.....I will do...I have drag-link in shop getting fitted for pins; I thought this might be the way- makes sense....thanks!

I'm the same way. I have a total of 10 of the old Farmalls and none of them will win a beauty contest but everyone of them is sound mechanically and all they need is gas to go to work.

Is this adjustment done with the bolts on top (under the steering wheel) or on the side of the tractor? Thanks

On the side. The bolts on top can be used to adjust the backlash of the steering column. Remove the bolts, raise the steering post, and remove or insert shims.
