repeated message about a generator

Just got a gen back from the "repair" shop. It will not "motor". It's a 6 volt unit. Specific gravity of the tractor's battery is low, about 1200. Would that be low enough to cause the gen to not motor? When trying to motor a gen, do you use heavy jumper cables or lighter gauge (like 14 or 16) test leads?
This gen when hooked up with a new regulator does charge, but not very strongly. It's a very light-use tractor and starts easily even with the poor battery so for now it will remain as is although a new battery would be proper. It's a very old Farmall "B" and starts and runs oh so nice, one of those Farmalls that we drool over.

does the tractor have a magneto? if engine has mag, it will run a long time before battery needs charging. and if not, it will still run quite a while, without charging.

The battery should be charged, but if it will start the tractor it probably would motor the gen. At least 10 gauge wire is needed for testing (solid house wire is great) If the third brush is adjustable =, move it as close to the fixed brush (Arm connection) to maximize output. If the charging voltage when running at 3/4 throttle is 6/6 or more it wil charge the battery OK. Jim

Even if you use jumper cables that won't hurt a thing. They're convenient because usually they're the only thing you've got around that has alligator clips or any description.

It should: motor- with a well charged battery. Many of these men helped me thru my "ordeal" on my genny- works great now. You can use 10-14g wire leads to motor. Contact the "repair shop". They should have returned it to you with a VR on it and ready for use... if the amp gauge goes to the right- its fine. lol... good luck:)
