IH2504 International Backhoe 1963

Advice or suggestions please:

First off I bought this beast because like any grown up kid I wanted my very own Backhoe :)
They say the difference between men and boys is the price (and size) of their toys

It is a 1963 IH 2504 Industrial with a 3000 loader on the front and a backhoe on the rear. It runs pretty dang strong but I am worried about the oil pressure, after it has run for a while it starts to sound almost like it is wanting to throw a rod bearing so I am afraid the oil pressure is just not what it should be. a few few questions if I may.

1) It is a gas engine four cylinder so I "think" it is the C153 engine?

2) Where can or should I connect a pressure gauge to check oil pressure?

3) Where can I get a new or rebuilt oil pump for the beast?

Thank You in advance for any thoughts and advice.

1) Most likely, yes, but you can confirm by looking at the sides of the engine block for the designation. It will be cast in and should say "C-153".

2) There is an oil pressure sending unit somewhere on the block that lights the OIL light on the multipurpose gauge on the dash board. Follow the wire from the dash to the engine and unscrew the sending unit. You can also find it by looking at the engine block for a funny little mushroom thing with a wire sticking out of it.

3) I believe that has a similar oil pump to a Super C, which means you can remove the cover plate, lap it flat, and get your oil pressure back. You can buy a pump at a CaseIH dealer or any number of aftermarket parts sources online. Unfortunately it is probably too late for this engine if it is knocking.

Thanks for the reply and information. I am going to pull the oil pump this weekend and have a look.

You really think it is toast? :-( it sounds awesome when it first starts and doesn't start sounding rough until it has run for a
while...

I don't think it will carry a lot of oil pressure. I would change the oil and make sure you use a good heavy duty straight 30 weight in it. does your oil light come on when the key is turned on then go out when its started.

Since you think you are hearing noise related to low pressure, I would include pulling the rod caps and checking clearance as part of having a look. If any rod bearing doesn't check out, I'd change the whole set and do the same with the mains. If it runs strong while having bad bearings, it suggests somebody stuffed new rings in without taking care of the bottom end.

OTOH, they may have simply not known to check out the oil pump.
