Farmal H starter

My H starter " sticks" some times. If I put it in fifth gear and rock tractor backwards enough to move engine it will turn over.Question,What is cause, bushing in starter or fly wheel gear?Thank you GP

Nature of the beast welcome to the olde IH's . Now the starter drive is probably an older one with some slop in the nose bushing.

tired starter ,bad cables, worn Bendix poor ground on the battery. I would get the starter refreshed then a new Bendix along with cables probably will start just like new. Remember that starter is only over 70 yrs old

Remove the starter and check the Bendix to make sure the Bendix gear is okay and it moves in and out freely. While you have the starter out, check the ring gear on the flywheel to make sure the gears aren't too chewed up.

On four cylinder engines, the engine will typically stop on a compression stroke - so there are two places on the ring gear where the engine will stop.

There is a new style starter pinion. It is different in design and has no big spring. It seems to work well and repairs the jamming issue. Repair the brushes and check bushing clearance when it is apart. Don't settle for the old style. Jim

I got the starter stuck on my SMTA, I took it apart to see, found the slight "lead-angle" bevel on the pinion was rounded and damaged on part of the pinion (just a few teeth). I carefully reshaped it with a dremel tool, put back together. Has not jammed again yet although I don't have a lot of starts since, maybe 25 or so.
