First Farmall

Hey everyone. Picked up an M from a friend and would like to get it running and paint it for parades and tractor pulls. Got it in the shop and drained the fluids today and this is what I found. 1. Pulled the oil plug and about a quart of clear water came oil and then black oil that smelled like a sewer. Oil filter was rusty and gross, vacuumed out the base and cleaned up pretty good. Is there a spin on adapter for it? 2. Radiator had been drained and went to drain the block it was full of anti freeze. 3. Hyd oil looked good and smelled normal. 4. Rear end had about half a gallon clear water and then what looked like tar in it. Any pointers will be appreciated. Thanks in advance

Well how fuzzy are you with getting all the grease out of the Final drive, i took the pto out of one M, and said i would never do that again, to get all the grease out. so i kinda hate to recommend that but you do get it all. It's hard to hit the drive couplear with the 3 feet of PTO shaft you have in your hand, otherwise you got to pull the top cover off. As far as a spin on oil filter, i seen one, and it wasn't installed. Good luck !!!

Did a Google. Evidently there are several types. Like yours and a couple different straight type or manufacturers. I think it looks racey. Think yours will look liie this picture some day?

Here's what I would do:
For the the engine I would fill it with oil and run it till warm. Drain and repeat once more. For the transmission I would put some heat lamps on it and let it drain. It could take a while. The other alternative is to pull the PTO and scoop out the sludge. Most likely the reason there is heavy grease in the transmission is that all the oil seals are shot and were leaking. If you want to make this one "Pretty" then I would figure on changing every seal on it. That's what I do with every tractor I restore. No point in painting it all up and having it turn into a grease ball. Oh, don't buy the seals from a dealer, they are VERY over priced. Try this web site first and then expand your search if they don't have them.

Well that was real smart. Bet the owner went ^^$$#??#@@@ when he found that mistake. Or a helper or his kid put it on.
