m weak on power

gentlemen, I have a 41 M that seems weak on power, won't pull itself in 5th gear. She has good compression, rebuilt carb, engine runs fine and revs up fine with no load, but when under load even just going up a small rise she loses rpms even in first or second gear. I replaced magneto with distributor a while back as I couldn't get timing right with the mag, thought it would be easier to put dist on rather than pull hydraulic pump and move gear mesh a couple cogs to get timing closer. Timing now is right on. wondering if I have a governor problem or if maybe advance weights in distributor might be the problem. I haven't opened the governor yet because of power steering pump cobbled together over it. Thoughts?

Jim, Delta thanks, I put timing light on her, no change on timing mark with throttle change. carb seems to be adjusted right. Dist is off a stuck 39 m that I have for parts. not run for 20+ years. I put new parts in it but didn't tear down to advance springs/weights. Guess when the temp drops below a hundred tomorrow I will take it off and tear down, might learn something. Jim, the throttle shaft is free and has full travel. too dang hot to mess with it any more today.

thanks again, Dick ND

If your timing is so late to cause that much power loss, the engine will sound laboring even when just standing still with throttle wide open. If timing checks out that it advancing, I would say you have a worn out governor. Unfortunately, you can't just reach in on an M and open the governor mechanism manually when pulling a load. On the tractors with external link from governor to carburetor it is simple to just take a look and see if governor is fully opening the carburetor under load. Even a twine string tied to the linkage to test things out is possible on them. When the M was run on the dyno you could take that top cover loose and see what it was doing. I repaired more governors on M's for lack of power than any single other item.

Slow timing will cause low power. As Jim says, check with timeing light to be sure.My '45 M(magneto) did that last summer. Was almost 10* slow.I installed a live 'maag' pump for live hydraulics, got the timeing off. It sounded GREAT,till I put it in gear and tried to drive away.Reset by 'ear'(used a stick in plug hole to find true TDC) as I had no timeing light. But runs as it should now,But setting with a light would definitely help! Or extra lean mixture.Does it cough/sneeze/fall flat when you yank open the throttle?

Use a timing light on it if it is stuck at TDC, it will be a dog. Yse the throttle lever and make sure the carb moves full range. (look in the tube from the governor to carb.) Jim
