C-123 Engine Old Style Water Pump Change Question

How are you supposed to get to the lower bolt on the water pump like that's found on a C-123 engine on a Farmall 100, 130, 200, or 230 tractor? I'm working on a 230 and if it weren't for the Shaft and pulley being extremely loose and worn on the old pump I wouldn't have been able to get my socket on the bolt head. How will I be able to put the new one on and tighten that bolt??? It is the lower bolt around the 5 o'clock position that holds pump to engine.

Had that problem years ago. Swivel head box end wrench
If you can get the ones with a built in ratchet, it is a breeze
If all else fails, take off the rad. Not such a bad idea, to have a good look at it's
condition at the same time . same for the hoses.

Radiator and alternator have been removed. It's gonna be tough getting anything in there. End wrenches are too fat

A good quality box-end wrench may be thin enough to go on there, or maybe you'd get lucky and an open-end wrench would do it. Rather than replace it with a cheap Chinese pump, I suggest taking it to NAPA and have them rebuild it for the about the same money.

End wrenches are too fat

That's because you have cheap end wrenches. Grind the box end down to fit. You don't need to torque these bolts down all that much where you need that much meat on the wrench.

I stop by garage sales occasionally and pick up batches of wrenches for a few dollars just so I have ones I can modify without remorse. Worse case you can get a cheap wrench from Lowes for about $5.

I will try other wrenches. I have many....good and Che's have ones. The ones I was using were craftsman ratcheting wrenches

That bolt does not need to come out of the pump, just loosen with a combination wrench.
The "offending" bolt is installed at the factory before they install the pulley; a new pump will have the bolt already installed.
Just replaced the water pump on my Super C and that is how it works.

(quoted from post at 08:30:01 09/08/17) thats a very minor problem in a wide open space.

You're right. I was worried about the socket. I got the new one on and used a smaller end wrench.

I'm sure one of these would do it! I And that is not even showing the wobble and swivel joint
sockets I also have that would most likely get at it as well. I suppose not everyone has the option
of having been a mechanic for 20 years of their early life and still have all the tools in your garage
holding the concrete floor down so it doesn't float away.

This is true. Sometimes the wrenches you get are pretty good too. Years ago my brother needed a box end wrench for some project and part
of the deal was cutting off one end of the wrench. He found a Proto box end wrench. He said that was the hardest steel he ever cut through!
Proto IMHO is one of the best - I think I'd have cut something else...
