IHC 460 not charging

I am working on a 460 gas 12v Neg grd tractor. It has a gen and VR it is not charging. If I ground the field terminal at the gen it does nothing. Both the VR and gen have a good ground. Does this mean the gen is faulty is there any more tests I can make I have not tried to motorize the gen yet. The amp meter is working as it goes to discharge when the lights are on.I did polarize the gen by jumper across B to A terminal at the VR
Thank you

Did the jumping of the B to A cause a spark? If it did, it means at least that the brushes are making contact. If not it probably needs at least brushes. If yes, and the field grounding did nothing as you said, the field might be open. (internally disconnected) There should be near zero ohms from the field terminal to ground when stopped. Jim

If you grounded the field and it didnt charge the gen is bad needs refreshed ect. That is a simple test ground field if it charges the reg is bad if it doesent charge the gen is bad.

Theres a good chance (if all else is wired right) the genny is bad if she still don't charge when FLD is grounded, but there can still be other problems. The motor test may tell you more and often if it passes BOTH checks it will charge but NOT always.

With field grounded, also briefly jumper from Armature to Bat and see if it indicates a charge. Contacts on the cutout in the voltage regulator may not be closing.
