Farmall 706 governor issues

Hi all. We've got a 706 with a surging governor. We never really noticed any issue with the tractor, probably because we never worked it very hard. Earlier this year we hooked it to a 9'6" discbine. It surged constantly from 1600-2300 RPM. I ended up having to crank in the bumper spring screw nearly the entire way to get the surging to stop just so I could cut the field. With the screw cranked in that far, I basically had no governor response to load change. I had to control it all manually. It was a pain in the rear, but I got the field knocked down. I also checked and adjusted the governor to carb linkage as per the manual with no change.

The throttle also seems to have a stiff spot in in. No linkages are binding, it seems like it's built that way. With the throttle lever at idle, it looks like there's a finger pushing the governor arm forward. As the throttle lever is advanced, this finger moves out of the way allowing the gov arm to move. It doesn't seem like a linear action though, it gets to a point where the finger just drops out of the way and the governor arm snaps. Is it supposed to be that way? If not, what's the fix?

So all that said, I'm thinking the governor needs to be rebuilt. Is there a known reputable shop that fixes these things?

And as an aside, the discbine also brought to light that the cooling system needs some attention. Is there a good aftermarket (not Chinese) radiator available for these things? Or should we get the original recored?

Thanks in advance!

Is the carburetor working properly? Before tearing into the governor, it could be worth your time to make sure the float, idle circuit and load circuit are all clean and adjusted right.

well there is not much to them gov. and with out having it layen on the bench to see for myself i can not say what it needs or does not need . Now as to adjustments here again i ca not see or play touchy feely . As to your radiator problems it may need a good cleaning and a GOOD radiator shop can handle that. also changing the fan blades to the diesel fan will pull in more air as it has more blades. Next to cut out some unwanted heat on this one the Experts will come down on me like vultures on a fresh road kill Change the gas your usen 87 octane burns HOTTER , do a MAJOR tune up Adjust valves make sure your total advance timing is correct for the cu. in engine that is in your tractor ? C263 23 degrees before TDC at full throttle , C291 18 degrees BTDC at FULL throttle . Make sure your heat riser is working , run nothing but Case I H LOW ASH ENGINE OIL . And while you have the valve cover off run a torque wrench over the head bolts .

Oh yea one more thing here check your manifold bolts and if they are loose pull the manifold and replace the gasket and check the manifold for being FLAT , if not flat then have it refaced and oce back on and tightened down don't think that just one tightening is good to go as it takes a while to get them set in .
