F30 mag timing

Where do I index advance control to mag at steering column. There are 2 roll pin stops at lever and am wondering if start is against upper stop and stop/shut off is past upper stop by pulling back against friction spring and overriding upper stop? My post is clear as mud I know, email is open

Well, if the spark control linkage is stock, and not modified, all the way UP is stop (grounded). All the way DOWN is full advance. If you could post a picture of your setup, that would be helpful.

Personally, I have never seen "stops" on any of my F20 or F30 spark control rods/lever. There could have been some early configs that I am not familiar with, but what you have posted is not what I have seen. No springs involved anywhere on mine.

I don't know if the pin stops where needed if the cap had stops inside. Yes as Tom said up and down and if your stop shut off does not work, you may need to adjust it a little to hit the post or clean it bright. The friction spring will help keep the rod from moving when under way.

Yes, I have seen "Pin Stops" on the steering wheel post bracket that supports the mag rod.

I suggest: (1) loosen the lever on the mag control rod. (2) Push the mag control; all the way down. (3) push the mag points cover al the way down. (4) tighten the lever on the Mag control rod that you loosened in step 1.
This should allow you to operate the engine in its "Sweet Spot".

Hopefully, lifting the mag control lever up against the top pin will kill the engine. If it doesn't, use a longer lever on the mag control rod or use a one-wire mag kill switch from a letter series connected to the condenser in the mag.(I use this method to kill the engine on my f-Series tractors.)

You described my setup to a tee. The spring I am referring to is a 3/8" dia coil spring between front control rod bracket and clamp/lever/connecting link.

Ok, that spring I also have. I thought you were referring to a spring similar to what is on the F12 spark rod assembly inside the friction cone.
