Farmall late War Time H paint color

Ive read few stories about the late model H
Farmall some came from dealership painted in
a Brown color. Anyone ever know if this is
true or painted one like it? Seeing the War
coming to and end I guess this could be
possible?

sounds like old wives tale seen new tractors waiting for delivery at the tractor works nesr the end of war and all were red. Few new ones in the area were all red quite a thing that new one were available

Had heard some guys talking at show here
local this past year said something about
his grandfather had bought one in 45 or 46
after the war due to shortage of color etc.
That the H delivered to his farm was like
an Orange red color? It was at the show so
after hearing them decide to take look at
it and sure enough it was a dual Orange
color? Not sure what to make of it so why
wanted to ask....?

There was an issue with getting the proper pigments for the paint during the war years, and substitutions were made. Some of those tractors did have a tendency to fade to orange rather quickly, but they were still red from the factory.

All of the old Harvester Red paint changed color over time. Paint type and pigment substitutions during WWII made it worse. They usually substituted lower quality paints on implements and saved the better paints for trucks and tractors.

The severe red pigment shortage [i:0a74e06c12]AFTER[/i:0a74e06c12] WWII caused the company to mix yellow in with the red for a period of time. This paint actually did look orange straight out of the can. In 2015, my local IHCC chapter donated an H to a school for a restoration project. When they pulled the sheet metal off, they discovered the original "orange" on the inside of the hood and grille.

Yeah that sounds about right. Them guys
said was like and Orange redish color and
then when faded would be brown color over
time etc.

Dad bought a couple gallons of what was supposed to be IH #50 red at a dealer going out of business
auction. He opened one and started stirring and it was almost purple. He talked to his favorite IH
dealer's parts man and the story was the purple was supposed to be mixed with the orange paint to make #50
red. Plan was to repaint the SM-TA and '39 H but had to buy new paint for that. He bought a gallon of
white enamel and mixed half a gallon white with a gallon of purple and painted the hayrack and a wagon.
Didn't everybody have a lavender hayrack?
