IH POTATO DIGGER

It depends on the model. I have an old horse drawn one where the potatoes dump on to a shaker while others have the chain going end to end.
 
Never heard of a potato digger? Mine was designed for horses so they've been around for a long time. If you grow acres of potatoes you want something besides a fork. I don't even use a fork for one row in my garden. A 20 second trip down the row with my digger and I'm done.
 
Single chain or double where the first chain dumps onto a second chain. I have seen them both ways, we still have a double style, just got rid of the other one.
 
I wonder how many guys with potato forks it would take to keep ahead of all the McDonalds french fry machines.
 
With my fairly recent relocation, I am now in the middle of potato country. A couple years back, I finally got the chance to walk out into a nearby potato field and see how potatoes are dug now. They were using 2 4-row windrowers and a 4-row digger with an elevator for truck loading. They used a windrower to dig 4 rows and dump the potatoes between the next 2 rows. They skipped 4 rows then did the same, dropping the windrow between 2 rows adjacent to the pair with the other windrow. They then ran the digger with the elevator over the 4 rows with 2 windrows, loading the whole 12 rows worth directly into a 10-wheeler truck.

Click on this link then click on the video to see the type operation I am describing. The video shows 6-row windrowers. The guys I watched didn't maintain the tight formation of the video, which I assume was maintained mostly for sales purposes.

the model of digger will determine that as the digging beds are different lengths, also a new chain requires more links than a used one, they don't run tight either this allows the shakers to shake the chain without over tightening it.
