560 Pre-combustion Chambers

I had a what ended up being cracked Head on my 560 282 CU IN Diesel. Was able to get 4 of the cups out of the old head other 2 are still stuck! IS THERE A CORRECT WAY TO REMOVE WITHOUT DAMAGING????
Next at what point is the hole considered worn past use???? Parts book calls for a 278-275-R3 I have found some 341163-R1??? IS There a difference in hole and or angle of hole??? Any and all input would be appreciated, thanks

341 163 R1 is for a 460D. I thought 460-560 had different injectors. I wouldn't mess around swapping the cups around. Try a couple cans of freeze-n-release available from C-IH. Failing that, the next time it happened to me, I was going try a bottoming tap and thread the step so I could pull it with a puller. How much would you take for a 341 163 R1? I busted one trying to punch it out from the bottom.

Fritz,
thank you for getting back to me..as of now I'm still not so sure that I'm not going to just use the 341 163 R3 cups?? they are brand new and as on yet no one can or has told me of any difference!!! I had hoped some other would have jumped in here and advised????

Injection nozzles are same for D-236 & 282 but there are of course two different styles, Bosh & IH so do not mix them in give engine. IH ones have smaller size 9/16 versus 3/4 inlet hex holder and are by far the best choice to use. The pre cups numbers have been confusing since day one on those engines. I can tell you this much though. IH tried a slightly smaller displacement pre cup in the 460 for increased compression for better starting but gave up on it right shortly. I never ran into one of those in all my days working on them. There was some slight difference as far as what head took which pre cup also. In the end, I'm thinking they ended up using same one in all of those engines. Hard to decipher from parts catalogs as the service bulletins is what covered the changes. I think you could do some measuring as far as the displacement to see if you have the same size. It will not be a very large difference though so you would have to measure volume very closely. Might be length of cup or internal size and depth of cavity.

Where are you getting them, may I ask? So far the best price I got was $100, used. The only way you can see what the differences are is to have one to compare. Use drill bits to gauge the size of the hole and compare the angle. The bowl on the inside might also be different. If you get one and decide not to use it, I'd like to buy it off you. email open, let me know.

The injectors are all the same the 9/16 size. I have many and had the local IH dealer test all until I came up with 6 non leaking matched that pop off at 1100 PSI! Had some at 1000 PSI and some at 1400PSI??? BUT BACK TO THESE CUPS???

The OD they all mic. the same and I just cannot tell on the inside down in cambers and the hole size and taper??? was hoping some on here knew because I am really baffled???

I will for sure let you know!! I am still attempting to figure out just what to due. I purchased the 6 new 341 163 R1 cups 25 / 30 years ago from the local IH dealer and have been boxed up on a shelf never used! like most of us should have purchased 100's of that type of stuff!

I would just use a syringe marked in cc's to check volume. That is what I do on the bowl in piston's. Water will heap up a little so use of some other liquid like parts cleaner, alcohol etc. Hot rodders know more about that than I do. For hole size I use wire gauge drill bit or regular fraction sized drill bit if it fits holes. I guess eye balling the taper is about it and see how it match's port in head compared to known cups that were originally in head.

Pete,
Maybe I am just over thinking this whole thing and none it matters??? I like you suggestion of the syringe However My thinking still goes back to the fuel pump is what is controlling the amount! Then the injector pops off and sends this set amount into this cup that directs the flow into the cylinder??? So why in the heck did the old IH engineers make all the odds tapers and angles??? Still hoping someone one here can shed some light???

Seems like the IH dealer quoted me like $348 each or something like that. They are very pricey new!
