crank starting an F20?

Where should the mag timing lever be set to safely hand crank an F20? Then once the engine is running should the lever be set?

I have been tasked to fire up an F20 restored by a friend who passed last year, and am totally unfamiliar with operation of an F20.

Thanks! ...Bob M

Turn the timing advance cap on the mag all the way down, then back it off a hair. This is fully retarded and minimizes possibility of kickback. With mine, half throttle, 2 pulls with full choke, third pull with half choke starts it in warm weather.

Thanks all for the guidance!

Had to pull it to get it to start the first time (stale gas in the carb bowl?). But it ran well, and I successfully crank started it again a couple hours later.

I agree with Pete.

Set your timing so that "All the way down" is the "Sweet Spot." When starting, lift the Mag cover up 10-15 degrees to "Retard" the spark -- it fires later after TDC. After it starts, rotate the mag all the way down (Clockwise from driver's seat) back to the Sweet Spot.
