M steering wobbly.

On my M the vertical shaft and worm gear that is on the steering moves up and down. I am assuming there is something on the bottom end that needs attention, bushing?. This probably gets talked about every week but I could not find the info I needed. Help.

if its the worm gear , you are referring to the steering shaft that comes down from the steering wheel and into the upper bolster? if so there is a bearing on the very end of the shaft under the pipe plug looking cover that screws into the bolster. there is also a bushing and seal on the other side of that shaft where it enters the casting on the bolster. also, on the verticle shaft that comes up from the tires, there is a lower bearing on the very bottom, then a big bushing pressed in to the lower portion of the bolster, then a seal on the very bottom of the upper portion of the bolster, another bushing and then the sector gear. often the worm and sector gears get worn and it causes a wobble. this site sells the replacement worm and sector gears.

Good advice, I will add that if the poster needs to replace the ball bearing referred to on the end of the horizontal shaft, it must be replaced with a heavy duty deep groove bearing. Parts suppliers and bearing houses can cross reference the size to cheaper bearings that will not hold up. They will sell the correct bearing for 1/3 the CaseIH price. Jim

Sorry for the confusion. The horizontal shaft that goes from the steering wheel to a worm gear seems to be OK. The vertical shaft that comes up thru the bolster is the shaft that is moving. I assume I need to pull off the wide front end and work on the bottom side of the vertical shaft.

yup, 2 bushings and a big bearing on the bottom of the verticle shaft. also........that shaft is extremely HEAVY!!!!! you will need to block the front end of the tractor with enough height to clear the shaft when you drop it out the bottom.i used a small fork lift to lower the shaft down. also look closeley at the bearing, irrc, but someone can correct me if i am wrong, but there is a slight chamfer on the inner part of the bearing, and if i remember (its been a long time) the chamfer goes down. the lower bushing has a grease hole in it, and its kind of hard to press it in and get it lined up, if you miss, just re-drill a new hole thru the zerk hole. i used sleeve puller pucks to press the bushings in.

Normal to have some play up and down. Long as the gear on top is tight on splines there's nothing to worry about some up and down unless excessive. With a wide front I have shimmed some for small play after making sure the thrust bearing at bottom of shaft is okay. Once in a while a gear goes down on splines to far and you have no play. Take some off bottom of sector gear that extends below teeth when that happens.

Loosen but do not take apart the 4 bolts that hold the bolster to the wheels. Jack the tractor up until the wheels are slightly off the ground. Hammer on upper nut with a 2 x 4 between nut and hammer. As has been mentioned, shaft is very heavy. Unbolt 4 bolts and roll out wheels. Put 6 x 6 under bolster and undo nut. Ellis.

Well, I got it all apart. The bottom bearing is extremely loose on the shaft. There is a bearing and a felt washer, nothing else. I don't have diagram for what all should be there. Is there supposed to be some bushings there also?

yup there are two bushings, one pressed on the lower and the other is pressed in the upper if you look carefully you will see them

33 and 25 are the bushings. they will need to come from case i h, if bermuda ken is around, he can get them for you.
