Cost of a t/a rebuild

I am reading some posts on t/a and trans/diff. oil. When I bought my 300 Farmall years ago it had a few bad gears so I split the tractor into 3 parts. While apart I noticed the main clutch and pressure plate were in need of attention. The t/a clutch and pressure plate weren't that great either. So they all got replaced. While it was apart I wondered about the t/a and it's condition. Took it to an old retired ih mechanic who was still doing side work. Guy is now about 80 and is known for being very knowledgeable with the older ih tractors. He looked at it and said you need this this and this. I will order it for you if you want. I told him to get the parts. When the parts came in he said to bring the t/a with me next Saturday morning. He started taking it apart and within a half hour or so it was all back together. And he didn't even want to charge any labor. Total cost for clutches and t/a rebuild was less than 700 dollars. Just wondering why a lot of folks say t/a 's are so costly to rebuild. This guy who did mine said he replaced everything that would ever cause it to fail. Not sure what exactly but I do remember ramp and rollers. No t looking for an argument, just curious.

On a 300 if the rest of T/A is serviceable other than the parts that keep the unit from slipping it's not real costly without labor. But if the unit has enough things that need replaced and you have to buy parts retail or sometimes even not retail price you can buy the T/A unit cheaper from a rebuilder. Clutch parts or seals and gaskets for housing doesn't come with unit.

I just got a bill in the mail today. It was $1.50 for parts and $270 labor. That's the big reason things are expensive.

It has been several years since I looked into the cost of rebuilding a T/A. As I recall, the older mechanical ones weren't too bad, but it really got expensive as you moved up to higher horsepower tractors, particularly if you went with the various offerings by Hy-Capacity. If I recall correctly, Hy-Capacity produced a T/A for the high horsepower tractors of the time and may have even offered a 10 year warranty, or perhaps even a lifetime warranty. These were serious bucks in their day.................at least as I can best remember from what I saw and heard around 30 years ago.

There is just no way of knowing how much it would cost. Some times all you need is a new ramp and roller. Usually the carrier is worn where rollers contact. Then you have three planetary gears, input gear, output gear which are all part of the planetary drive. If you were to buy all that separately you would have over 700. Haven't even talked about TA dry clutch with pressure plate and flywheel. Throw out bearing, other bearings, carrier seals, gaskets. Like I said, just no way. A regular duty from Hy Cap is about 550 but that does not include any thing but planetary unit assembly with output shaft. Years ago, when labor was $4 and hour, we figured about 200 to 250 for a TA job on a mta or 400 etc.
