should I change it ?

I decided to change the transmission oil in my SMTA. Bought three pails of 90 wt. Got home and pulled the plug and the oil was astoundingly clear and clean.
My uncle gave me this tractor in 1992 and it hasn't been changed since then, and I doubt that he had changed it since it had been sitting for 20 years in the
barn. Does 90 wt wear out or have a shelf life. Should I strain it and put it back in the tractor, or go ahead and replace it? I can use the 90 wt for one
of the other M tractors. Thanks, Ellis

Did it look like 90 weight. Would use the 90 weight in others and hytran or something close in the MTA unless no T/A. If no water came out first it's up to you on changing. If it has hytran in it now it will only help on moisture control for a period. If tractor has a T/A it should have lost 90 weight long ago.

They came from factory with 10 weight oil with an additive that IH dealers use to sell but don't anymore. HYTrans is what is used in a super MTA now.

Came with heavy oil. IH then changed recommendation several times. 75 gear oil. SAE engine oil. SAE oil with T/A lubricant additive to so many parts engine oil. 80 weight if temperature constantly above 40. Hytran was last. May have missed one. If warm climate when tractor is used heavy oil may not be a problem. Must not be if it went this long.

Ellis will point out different things IH went through before they decided on hytran. Hytran today is different than the original also. Don't care what you use in your tractor just answering the question of what it came with. First picture is a SMTA owners manual dated 5-28-54. 400 dated 10-28-54 says the same. Next picture a 400 dated 6-26-56. Next picture is a 350 printed 6-57. Next is a 450 printed 3-7-58.

I would use the Hytran!! When I bought my 300, I did the same thing. Decided to change all the fluids so I knew how old they were. The manual said to use 90wt in the transmission. So that's what I put it in. About 6 months after doing that, I was pulling something and needed the TA. It worked for a short time and them made a whirring noise and that was the end of the TA. The overrunning clutch went out. So $1600 later, a new TA and after 12 years everything has been fine with Hytran!!! I would not use the heavy oil!!!!!

I was there when they were making up their minds. Also notice the use of the additive in the steering gear. Worked great but what can you replace it with. It was a extreme pressure additive.

Our IH dealer of over 50 years said not to use 90 weight in our area because in cold weather the 90 weight will take out a TA.I think they have worked on enough of them to know what they are talking about. I have been using HYTrans with a Lucas Hydraulic additive since 2010 in my 450 no leaks, quite transmission, TA shifts better than what ever was in gear box before.
