International 140 tool bar clamps

I recently picked up a 1976 IH 140 cultivating tractor which I intend to use for cultivating row crops. The mid-body toolbars are 1-1/2 inch square, mounted flat. I haven't seen this configuration before. Here in the west what you see is 1-1/8 or more often 2-1/4 diamond mount toolbars. I need clamps for the 140 (I have just one), and I can't find them locally at either the IH dealer or my local tillage shop. Any suggestions about where I might find some? Thanks.

Your post is a little confusing to me. I have a '68 140 and a '72 140. The mid hydraulics operate tool bars on each side which multiple tools fit on. These bars are 1 3/8" square on both tractors. The mid hydraulics move these tool bars up and down. When you say yours are mounted flat, I have no idea what that means. What is the difference in a diamond mount and a square mount? Is your reference to a diamond mount simply a square mount with 2 corners oriented vertical and 2 horizontal?

Sorry for the confusion. What I meant to indicate is that the sides of the bars are vertical, the top and bottom are horizontal, versus the typical bars around here which would have all four surfaces at 45 degrees off plumb (referred to locally as 'diamond tool bar'). I have one clamp, made by IH, cast steel. If I re-install the bars diamond fashion, (which would be a more annoying job than you might think) then there are plenty of clamps to be had, but I'm trying to avoid that if I can.

All mid tool bars on 140's around here also have vertical sides and horizontal tops and bottoms. Plenty of implements and fasteners for them. The 2nd post down shows some fasteners and tools for that set up. I would not change to the diamond set up you describe since that is an unusual design.

You would probably help yourself by clarifying what you are looking for. Maybe post a picture of your one clamp. Typical cultivators on a 140 (model 144) have separate left and right sides. The tool bars are 1-3/8 square and mounted flat. Usual tools have a round standard. This basic style dates back to the Super A. The clamps for these are plentiful in both used and new.

A less common tool bar mounts straight across the entire cultivator. This is the model 452. The tool bars mounted flat. The earlier version for the Super A mounted diamond or edge up. It used standards in an assortment of shapes/sizes. Clamps for these are harder to find and would not necessarily by found the same places as clamps for the 144.

Mike:
Below is a link to post/image that shows a 140 with a full cultivator setup.
I believe what you are looking for are the shank cuffs or clamps. They slide on toolbar and hold the cultivating shanks in place with a wedge bolt.

Hope this is of help

And not to offend anyones recommendation, but you'd do yourself a favor to pay more and buy good, used IH cuffs/clamps rather than the new aftermarket ones. I can't tell you how many people all over the US have not been pleased with them including myself. If you want good originals I have more than enough to supply you. Email at [email protected]

The 1 3/8 clamps are common but needing the 1 1/2 mite be hard to find as you are experiencing. Have you had any luck at all finding some. I looked at mine 1 3/8 and dont see how they could be enlarged.

I have a bunch of the clamps that used flat stock for shanks and mounted to the Diamond tool bars as they were used on the veggie models for the A,B,BN and C. Should sell them as the cult is sold and i do have lots of extras

(quoted from post at 04:16:09 08/14/17) www.agrisupply They are here in North Carolina and IH sold 140s down here by the trainloads. Eason

I've used those and know a lot of folks who have too. Agrisupply clamps and wedge bolts are junk. I haven't found a suitable replacement for the originals yet
