Highcrop 34 verse 38 rubber???

I have seen a lot if not all highcrop tractors have 34" rubber verse 38" rubber. Wasn't the reason for highcrops to get more clearance to clear the crop. So why did they use 34' rubber verse 38". I never have figured this one out. Can anyone explain this to me. Thanks Gerald

Many were based on small frame small farm tractors like A and B Farmalls. The drop boxes and front axle/spindles were the primary lift factors. To use larger diameter tires also required changes in transmission gearing which may have required even more expense than using drop box final drives. Just my thinking. Jim

Not to disagree with you & I know I didn't mention this in my first question but I was referring to the Farmall 706-806, Case 730-830, John Deere 3020-4020 being the larger tractor verse the smaller ones. I never gave any thought about the gearing but I suppose that could be possible. Thanks Gerald

I am DEFINITELY not the tractor "expert" that it says under my nick, but I had always heard the same thing. I'm sure there are other reasons for going with smaller wheel. One other thing I've heard was to get the rear of the tractor closer to the ground for such-n-such purpose; maybe due to getting an attachment down lower? Another reason might be to lower the center of gravity if the machine was often working on hillsides. ....I dunno.

Don't know what the reason was. Like on a 806, 34 and 38 were both used on row crop and high crop. Only a couple of 38 tires offered by IH at the time for a 806 were much taller than a 18.4 X 34 tire.

You're talking about the early 1960's tractors. The reason they didn't use 38's is because, at least the way I understand it, is the 18.4x38 had just been developed and was not in common use yet.

The way I understand it, 18.4x38 didn't come into common use until the 1206, and then only because the tractor was tearing up 18.4x34's in field testing. Again, my understanding, which could be completely wrong.
