M - Sheered Camshaft Pulley Nut

My 2 1/2" socket came in today so I took a crack at getting the front plate and gears off. Everything went well (the locked up crank held it in place so a cheater pipe and minimal effort removed the nut). Once I got the front cover off I think I found what killed this tractor in the first place as the camshaft pulley nut was lying in the bottom of the front cover. It had sheered right off destroying the key and threads on the way off. As soon as the gears were removed the crank turns over fine but still no budge from the cam and every lifter seems to be locked into place. So this leads me to two questions...

1 - Is there a good way to remove the lifters and/or camshaft or will that be easier with the motor upside down with the crank out of it?

2 - What do you think caused the failure? I would think something overheated in the valve system and the camshaft locked up and inertia did the damage.

Once the "mechanical time" of the engine is lost then it won't run and no amount of jacking with stuff on the exterior (fuel, ign) won't cure it.

Probably the nut got loose and the gear wobbled along for awhile until the bore got egged and the key finally let loose.

I would think the lifters are locked by corrosion. This is where I would get some Kroil (best) or PB Blaster (close) and spray the area down daily. Eventually a soft metal drift like brass or copper rod and a deadblow steel-faced hammer could be used but I'd keep it wet with the Kroil for a couple of weeks.

One could get aggressive and use a the blue wrench and ever larger hammers but this has the downside risk of breaking expensive stuff.

Remove oil pan,oil pump has to come out, rocker cover and rockers has to come off, next remove push rods then tappet cover behind oil filter has to come off remove tappets, cam should come out front after those items are removed.I would guess tappet broke and stopped cam or oil pump locked up.Be ready for suprises when you open her up.Scott
