My tractor ( SMTA ) just locked in two gears. Somewhere between 1st and 2nd. I was shifting from 2nd to 1st when it locked up. The shift lever won't move.
It is locked up on a steep hillside pointed downhill. I am really scared to mess with it and there is no way to tow it to the barn. What should I do? I am
going back to put some 6 x 6 pieces under the tires in case it should pop out of gear, and also get the mower off of it. I am not a mechanic, what should I
do? Ellis

The gears are stuck because of the force on them. THe first issue is getting the down hill force removed. Putting a different tractor or truck behind the SMTA and using a comealong, wench or careful pulling will do that. Another way is to really block one rear wheel and the fronts. then jack the opposite rear wheel to remove the force. Next take the shifter out of the tower. (Remove the plug from one side and drive the pin out the other removing it. THis allows the shifter to come out, and with a big screw driver, or small pry bar, move the shift rails back in alignment across the middle of the hole. If you have the equipment to weld, welding up the shifter according to the dimensions given in pictures of the tip, and grinding it to shape will be best. If you want to get it back to the house, move the middle slot forward to put it in 3rd gear. Fix it when at the house. Jim

Use another tractor & pull uphill enough to relieve the pressure. Take the shift lever off or the belt pulley housing & line up the rails for neutral.

Easy just block the wheels so the tractor cant move. Now tie the clutch pedal forward. Remove the pin on the shift lever where it goes into the tranny. Lift the lever out and look in and you will see the shift rails. using a long screwdriver you can slide the rails so they are all lined up in the center position. Put the lever back in and pim. You have locked the tranny into two gear at once. The end of the shift lever is worn enough to let that happen it can be repaired buy someone who is knowlegeable.

If you take the pressure off might be able to get it out of 1st, and then drive it down to level ground in 2nd where you can more easily work on the problem. Just get the lever moved to neutral and it should drive in 2nd.

I would leave the mower on to drag behind as an anchor for the descent down the hill since you can't use 1st.

Just for future reference, shift in a deliberate H pattern, not a V. Trying to go diagonally from 2nd to 1st is what got you into trouble.

Ok, here's where I am so far. I called a neighbor to help. I put huge wooden blocks under the rear tires. We got the 8 foot mower off and pulled up the hill to level ground. I hooked my other M to the SMTA and bumped it a few times and my neighbor sat on it and pulled it into neutral. I started it but it wouldn't move in any gear. I put it back in neutral and let the clutch out and I think it is moving in 3rd gear. I drove it back to the barn. I was scared to death on the hill, and I don't mind admitting it. I'm not a very good mechanic as Don knows. I don't have any choice but to try and fix it myself. I do know my way around a welding machine and might be able to figure out how to fix the end of the shift lever. I really appreciate the quick information from Jim and Don and others. Any other advice will greatly appreciated. THANKS MUCH, Ellis

my c farmall does this. hurrying the shift, is what does mine, most of the time.
next time, block wheels, jack up one rear, rock the wheel and sometimes it will shift.
