1944 farmall M

I have just aquired a 1944 M, it's pretty rough but I was told it ran when it was put away 20+ years ago. The first thing I need help with is how to tell if it is 6 or 12 volt, there are no batt wires on it. There is a generator with a regulator mounted on top of it, and it has a distributor that looks like it goes into a hydraulic pump, thank you for any help
 
Generator equals 6 volts. Hyd pump says it is not a standard M and it has been up graded at some point. If I had it I would fill the cylinder with ATF and let ti sit at least a week
 
Its most likely a 6 volt generator but someone could have upgraded to a 12 volt generator. Sometimes the voltage is marked on the bottom of the regulator. If it was moved up to 12 volts there would either be a resistor on the wire to the coil or the coil would say 12 volts, no resistor needed. Usually when people upgrade to 12 volts they add an alternator instead of a 12 volt generator.
 
More than likely it is 6V positive ground, but pull out one of the headlight bulbs, the part number will tell.
 
Thanks for the response,the coil says 12 volt no resistor required. But I can't see anything on the generator that says 12 volt. The gen has numbers on it but they don't definitively say 12v (1101355----93236). Agin thank you
 
Well i thought about that, but i think the lights were barrowed about 50 years ago. So that idea is a no go
 
1101355 is the early 6-volt generator used in a cutout system. It is the original part number for 1944. Since it is a cutout system (mounted on top of generator) it will probably charge a 12-volt battery. It will do it very slowly while probably running a little hot.
 
There is a regulator of sorts mounted on top of the generator, so is my best bet to leave it a 6 volt
