Hit and miss IH

I have been given a hit and miss IH engine out of
my neighbors old barn. The original owners son
Says it ran when they quit using it to run two seed
cleaners. It hasn't been used since the late 40's. it's
been inside it's whole life. It's not locked up. The tag
is not legible except the serial number stamp which
is W 18418. My questions are: what model is this
engine? Are parts available ? Any tips? I'm a novice
with hit and miss engines . Any help is greatly
appreciated !

Go to old-engine.com and post there. Lots of good information there and parts suppliers. By the serial number you have a type M engine. The number should have a two letter prefix determining the HP... AW-1 1/2HP, BW-3HP, CW-6HP, DW-10HP. As stated by another poster it is not hit and miss governed, rather throttle governed. They are fantastic engines and run very well. And just a tip, the fellas on Smokstak hate threads with no pictures!!!!

Gotta agree with you, Teddy, to some folks anything with open flywheels is a "hit and miss".

If Travis is right (which I'm sure he is) and this is an "M" model engine, if you are going to try to get it running all you need to do is watch the series of videos by Shop dog Sam. I don't have any single cylinder engines but once I watched one of these videos I couldn't stop until I had watched them all. His vast knowledge of the engine and back country style just hooked me. The cast water compartment on the engine in this series of videos broke some how and the original owner used some sealer and tied it together with "bailing wire". Sam liked the unique feature so he restored the engine but used the broken part leaving it tied together with wire. Well enough ramblings, hope you enjoy your engine.

if it has two spoked flywheels it is the model M. if it has a solid flywheel and a belt pulley on opposite side then it is the LB or LA model. model M is green, others are red.

Early LA engines were gray with red flywheel, pulley, and pinstripe. 1939 and on were red. LB engines were red.
