Got a 1950 cub. Brakes are, well there ain't none. Adjusted the rods on both sides. Couldn't push pedals down. Loosened em a bit can push em but won't stop tractor. If you are going real slow you can " stand on " pedal and it will stop. Any other adjustments I'm missing ? Or does it need new shoes/ pads. Thanks.

Make sure your drums are tight on the axles.
They are held on with a key and set screw if I remember right.
If this is good, the brakes might have oil on them or worn out.
I know the brakes on mine do not stop very well with the belly mower engaged, because of no overrun clutch.

rake shoes are probably oil soaked from leaking transmission/rear end seals. Or they could be wore out. Should be able to look through the rear hole (same as the front where the brake rods go through) in the castings with a flashlight and get an idea of what's happening. Could also be brake drum loose on shaft, but since it is stopping on occasion, unlikely. If oil soaked you can burn them off with a few passes of a propane torch or just replace. There are two styles if you replace make sure you get the correct ones.

The cub is like most other tractors and the brakes sort of work but that is it. Oil soaked which is common or being as old as it is flat out wore out

I just cleaned an amazing amount of acorns and mouse nest stuff out of the hole where rod goes in. Back too. Blew most of it out. Was oily. Maybe try the brake cleaner.

check oil level in transmission. water tends to get in there. oil level may be too high and is wetting the brakes with oil
