H vs 300/350 4th gear

Is there a difference? I know the H had an option for a 7mph 4th, and extrapolating from what I'm seeing on a 300 tach, it had it standard. Can the H 4/5 set be directly replaced by the latter 4/5 set?

I'd like to know, as my H is getting worse at jumping out of 4th, and that's where it spends a lot of working time.

300 and 350 transmission gears won't work in a H or SH. SH will work and speed gears up, but you need the complete SH gear set. Aftermarket 9 speed will speed ground speeds up, but if you need PTO turning at full power it will turn to fast. Finding a good IH high speed fourth setup would not be easy.

Ot you COULD just buy a 300, strip the sheet metal off, install the H sheet metal onto the 300, and call it a Super HTA.
 
Rusty, if I could have found a 300 for anywhere near what I got the H for, I would have gone that route. But yeah, it's a nice idea. :)

No I meant to say a SH gear set will work in a H if the bottom SH shaft with gears is used, reverse idler gear and top shaft SH gears. 300 and 350 gears won't go in a H.
 
Why would you want a 7 mph 4th gear? About the only thing a fast 4th would be good for is pulling a wagon or trailer. I like the regular H and M speeds much better than the Super speeds. Our Super M was too fast for plowing in third and to slow in second. Third on our regular H was just right for plowing and we mowed thousands of acres of alfalfa in 4th.
 
I like the fast 4th gear in the Super H as well as the sped up speeds in the other gears. Back when we farmed with the Super H we used 4th for cultivating the third time, mowing with a #100 IH mower, and other operations where you didn't need the power and could go fast. The other gears were basically just one gear faster that the H. I still have the old Super H and 4th gear is one of the gears I use the most.

ots of road travel to other fields, and just enough inclines in any direction to require a drop to 4th gear in a few long places when pulling anything, and from flying in 5th to crawling in 4th, it makes trips seem to take a longer time than necessary. Even spreading manure with a ground drive spreader is near WOT in 4th. A little less throttle and a little more speed would be fine.
 
I thought there was always a add in Red Power magazine where a guy always got new out of stocks gears, call Dennis at Red Power he knows the guy personally.
 
Your missing the whole advantage of the Super H, being able to pull the same implements faster. The fast 4th is better by far for mowing, raking, doing chores. 3rd in a Super H is the same 5 mph as 4th in a straight H anyhow.

Did all manner of fieldwork with Super M-TA and 450. Plowed sod in 2nd, old corn ground in 3rd. Dad even put the Fast 4th gear set in his '51 M. Plowing and disking in 4th with an H & M over stressed the pilot bearing in the transmission, the small shaft the bearing fit over broke off on tractors with oversize sleeves and pistons.

The slow 5 mph 4th made WAY too big a jump when shifting up to 5th gear with an H. The stock H & M gears really sucked! Once Dad traded the '39 H for the '54 Super H I never missed that old '39 H for a single second. Anything the H could do the Super H did faster and better.
 
I would've died of old age before I was 10 if our Super M didn't have the faster 4th gear. We used it primarily for raking back then and to rake you really needed to go 6-7 MPH if you wanted to get anything done with a single rake.

The H/M 4th gear seems to have been an IH "doh!" moment that was 'fixed' with the SH. I just wish the SH had been released 10 years earlier and outnumbered the H by 10/1, rather than vise-versa.
